Ordering Chainsaws from the USA

August 19th, 2013

I have to say I know very little about chainsaws, but I have learned a lot about how expensive some are in Australia compared to the USA and how difficult it is to purchase them from a USA store and have them shipped to  Australia. All of the major chainsaw brands such as Stihl and Husqvarna have licensing agreements with their distributors here in Australia. If you try to purchase a chainsaw from the USA you will be redirect you to an Australian distributor.

People have tried to get around this by purchasing the chainsaw themselves and having it shipped to someone in the US who can then forward it on to you in Australia. Unfortunately this is just not possible with chainsaws. Why? All retailers of chainsaws are asked by the manufacturer to test them prior to sale. This involves putting petrol (gas) in the tank. Although this is not an issue when chainsaws are sold within the USA since they are transported by ground or picked up in person, once an chainsaw tank has had petrol in it then it cannot be shipped by the air. This makes it illegal to ship a tested chainsaw to Australia. This is of course a very clever way of forcing Australians pay far more!

Fortunately my US partner has found a distributor of Stihl chainsaws who has agreed not to test the chainsaws before sale. Any new chainsaw purchased through Price USA will not have had any petrol put into the tank and so can be shipped to Australia. My US partner is able to get a discount from the retailer when purchasing multiple chainsaws and we pass this discount  on to you. The chainsaws are repacked by my US partner at no extra cost to you to reduce the shipping cost. Once all of this is take into account the total landed of cost can be hundreds of dollars cheaper than here in Australia. I should mention that my US partners can get any Stihl products, not just chainsaws.

If you are interested in ordering a chainsaw then just fill in my order page and I will send you a quote. PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR A QUOTE HERE AS I CAN ONLY QUOTE YOU VIA MY ORDER FORM.

The shipping cost depends on the chainsaw and bar ordered, but assume around 20 to 30 lbs volumetric shipping weight (US120 – $175). The shipping within the USA cost is US$30 (this covers my US partner driving to the dealer and picking up it in person).

I have added a couple of quick buys for the Stihl MS291 and Stihl MS391 since these seems to be the most popular. Not all models are worth ordering from the USA (it is model specific). You can get an idea of the US price for the other chainsaws from here. Don’t forget to take into consideration the exchange rate and the shipping costs.

Edit 2. May 2015

I should mention that my US partner can now ship chainsaws that have “trace” amounts of petrol in the tank as hazardous goods. This means that can ship other brand chainsaws, but given the weight and volume of most chainsaws it might not be worth doing so. Always estimate the likely cost of ordering from the USA and compare it to the price here in Australia as it is not always cheaper to order from the USA once you include the shipping cost into account.

If you want a quote on a chainsaw please just fill in my order form. It helps me advise you better if you include what the chainsaw model you want costs here in Australia.
